While the hordes flock to the coast, escape to our freshwater faves. This is a round up of the best places to cool off in nature’s very own swimming pools without that pesky sand.
Thomson River
Walhalla or Cowwarr
A year-round icy dip awaits below the Walhalla Road Bridge. The slow-moving river forms a wide pool with gravel river beach. Steer clear of the rapids down stream. Cowwarr Weir is a playground of inflatable toys on those sweltering days with the wide, cool waterway providing a refreshing dip.

This scenic area is laced with picnic tables along the banks of the lake, very popular with families in search of a place for children to explore or have a splash. It is also a destination for watersports including canoeing, waterskiing, jet skiing and sailing.
Blue Pool
Briagolong
This natural pool in the gorge on Freestone Creek is a tranquility-overachiever. Just outside of Briagolong, while away an afternoon on the lakeside beach made of rocks. The mystical deep lake keeps the water refreshingly cool even on those sweltering summer days.
Lake Glenmaggie
Near Heyfield
A well kept secret, the drive there alone is worth the visit, passing through bucolic countryside with views over hills. This serene and very pretty lake has many scenic picnic area and the large expanse of water is a hotspot for recreational boating, swimming and fishing.
Avon River

Take the kids and your four legged friends for a splash in the shallow, slow-flowing water near Apex Park in Stratford.
Ramrod Swimming Hole
Near Bruthen
Just north of Bruthen, the great Tambo River widens into a scenic pool surrounded by hills lined with poplar and stately gum trees. This atmospheric spot is perfect for a refreshing summertime swim or picnic day out.
Blue Rock Lake
Near Moe
This popular spot near Willow Grove is a man-made reservoir well set-up for scenic picnics with tables, barbecues and shelters. The still waters are family-friendly and great for beginner swimmers.
The Bluff Reserve
Near Buchan
Head to the Buchan River for a day of freshwater fun. Under the shade of the photogenic cliffs, The Bluff Reserve swimming hole is perfect for tubing and refreshing swim in the crystal-clear water. Take a lilo out on the water and float under the Swing Bridge near town.
Powlett River

Ok, this one’s not strictly fresh water, but the mouth of Powlett River is an unbeatable family-friendly playground on a hot summer’s day, so we had to mention it. Take your boogie boards, kayaks and inflatable rafts and explore the calm and wide mouth of the river.
Narracan Falls
Near Trafalgar
Spend a peaceful afternoon aside this beautiful waterfall. Enjoy listening to the sound of cascading water after a swim in the pool below. Fill the esky with snags and salads, the barbeque area at Narracan Falls Streamside Reserve off Falls Rd is the perfect place for a spot of lunch with the relaxing sound of flowing water as your playlist.
Balley Hooley

A short drive from Buchan you will find Balley Hooley, known locally as ‘The Junction’. This delightful swimming spot marks the meeting place of the Buchan River with the mighty Snowy River. Relax in the clearing around the river’s edge or take to the river for swimming, fishing, rafting and kayaking.
