Blessed by an abundance of nearby rivers, Buchan boasts ample places to cool down.
Head to The Bluff Reserve for deeper water. There’s a swimming hole at a wide point at the bend in the Buchan River. While the side of the river nearest the road is relatively exposed, a swim to the bluff side of the river will have you under a shady stand of Plane Trees. Take a lilo or tube and let the current take you to the Swing Bridge. The river may become unswimmable during times of drought or after flooding.
For splashes in the shallows, Buchan Caves Reserve is fantastic for paddling with kids. There are well-shaded spots along Spring Creek opposite the Swimming Pool. The water is not usually deeper than waist height.
Just out of town at Basin Creek Falls the shallow pool at bottom of the waterfall is a great place for a splash, particularly if you’ve just made the scramble down the hill and need cooling off.
Timbarra River (at the Timbarra Bridge Camping Area) and Balley Hooley both offer a good dip in crystal clear gurgling waters.
