There’s nowhere else in the world quite like the curious village of Walhalla.

Set in a deep valley at the base of the Victorian alps, this picture-perfect town is the place time forgot. Lovingly preserved from its once-upon-a-time gold mining era, the town today nods respectfully to its heritage with a delightful oldsy feel.

Feed your wanderlust with Insta-ready buildings and streetscapes, ablaze with a heady mix of colours in autumn - crimson, burnt orange and golden peach.

Surrounded by forest and national park, it’s no surprise Walhalla is a stepping off point for camping, fishing and 4x4 enthusiasts. The Thomson River also offers scenic opportunities for kayaking and rafting with some low grade rapids.

There’s undoubtedly something in the air in Walhalla - it’s a stockpile of zen and a place that commands your everyday stresses are left at the gate.

Things to do in Walhalla

Walhalla Goldfields Railway Walhalla train over bridge surrounded by forest
  • The Walhalla Goldfields Railway runs on select days between Walhalla and Thomson stations. The restful journey by train takes you through the surrounding forest, alongside the cheerfully ambling Stringers Creek, over trestle bridges and the impressive Thomson River Bridge. The train station is every bit as delightful as you’d hope a station from the early 1900s might be.
  • Visit during autumn to see some spectacular foliage from deciduous trees, or throughout spring for some impressive blossoms and blooms.
  • Take an underground adventure on a guided tour through the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine. Learn about the mining methods and see the quartz reef that put Walhalla on the world’s stock markets.
  • Take the Self-Guided Town Walk and wander the main street and shopfronts. Take in the Old Mountain Brass Band Rotunda (cue contented sigh), Corner Store, Fire Station and Post Office & Museum.
  • Visit Walhalla Corner Store & Museum to explore the history of the town and browse historic artefacts and photographs. The knowledgeable locals can help with putting together the perfect one-day or multi-day itinerary for you.
  • Stop in at the Fire Station Museum to find out a bit about fire fighting equipment of times past and learn stories of fires that have impacted the town.

  • Above the town sits the unique cliff-top Walhalla Cemetery, with more than 1,000 graves testament to the hardship of the past.
  • Wind your way up to the local cricket oval... it's not without its quirks - the top of the hill was lopped off in an effort to create level ground.
  • Pitch a tent for a Walhalla camping adventure, the best way to get back to nature.
  • Hear the ghoulish tales and some of the town’s most harrowing stories while standing on the very soil on which they occurred on a Walhalla Ghost Tour.
  • A walk through the only original public building remaining in the town, the Walhalla Old Post & Telegraph Office Museum, will transport you back in time. Built in 1886, the post office and postmaster's residence are largely unchanged, including lavish wall paper, and is now heritage-listed.

Walking & riding

Take a walk above town on the old tramline. Extending nearly 7 kilometers from Walhalla North Gardens to Thomson Station, along a section of the Australian Alps Walking Track, there are several access points within Walhalla’s town center, allowing for shorter sections of the route to be explored.
