3km, 2 hrs | Baw Baw National Park | Embark on a 3km return walk to Mushroom Rocks and see the impressive granite tors amidst rugged alpine landscapes.
Don't be fooled, it's not the set of Jurassic Park, but you can soak up the prehistoric-looking tree ferns accompanying the maze of moss-covered giant boulders.
This walk covers a section of the Australian Alps Walking Track that leads to a maze of giant granite tors rising from the forest bed. The track gently climbs through cool temperate rainforest. Eyes peeled during spring and summer for gorgeous subalpine orchids.
Once you arrive at the boulders, you get bonus points for letting out your inner child: climb, hide, chase and explore.
After just five minutes on the trail, you'll come across a small waterfall. Continue along a rugged path with steps, narrow sections, boardwalks, and climb over the occasional rocks and tree roots. The trail requires squeezing past bushes and ferns, their earthy scent filling the air. You'll first encounter striking rock formations that tower overhead in a cave-like arrangement, covered in moss. A short two-minute walk from these formations leads you to a clearing with a blue sign that provides historical insights about Mushroom Rocks and a view of the rocks.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive along Thomson Valley Rd before turning onto Mt Erica Rd. At the intersection with Middle Tyers Rd, take a right and cross over the bridge. Then, continue for a slow 15-minute drive along a dirt road to the car park, where you'll find a picnic table and an information board about the walk. The unsealed section of the road is steep in parts and can be very muddy. It may require a 4WD if the ground is very wet.
