Beneath the unsuspecting forest floor of a scenic valley lies an enchanting system of limestone formations known as the Buchan Caves.

The labyrinthine network is one of Australia’s most spectacular, rich in colour and adorned with still pools and a mesmerising latticework of towers.

Buchan Caves Reserve is located the alpine region of East Gippsland, about 45 clicks north of Lakes Entrance. There is a Visitor Centre onsite to help you plan your trip.

Cave Tours

The best way to explore the ancient limestone wonderland is to join a tour. Two caves are open for show: Royal Cave is known for its glassy calcite-rimmed pools and Fairy Cave is laced with intricate stalactites and stalagmites, replete with ornate chambers. Guided tours to both caves run daily. The good folk at the Visitor Centre can give you all the details.

Above ground, the scenic and peaceful reserve is picnic-perfect and camping-primed. The large grassy reserve is dotted with mighty deciduous trees making for a show-stopping autumn. The Buchan River runs through the park adding an extra touch of tranquility.
