A soulful village on the banks of the Tambo.

Bruthen is tucked into the foothills of the high country where the Great Alpine Road starts to bend and wind. Suddenly the dense forest opens out into a lush, green valley as you enter the town of Bruthen. The Tambo River ambles slowly through the town dotted with historic buildings, rounding out the bucolic landscape.

Things to do in Bruthen

Take a walk through the historic town centre, where 19th century shopfronts line the main street, their verandahs stretching over the footpaths.
Visit Tambo Valley Honey for honey tastings and browse the gift shop filled with bees wax and honey-inspired goods.
Pop into Bruthen Art & Information Centre where local artisan and produce is on display. You can also peek inside The Police Lockup & Fettlers Hut for a glimpse into life in the town’s history throughout the 1800 and 1900s.
If you are riding the East Gippsland Rail Trail, Bruthen makes a most excellent stopping off point between Nicholson (20km west) and the enchanting Colquhoun Forest and Stony Creek Trestle Bridge as you reach Nowa Nowa (30km east).
Walk amongst a rainforest landscape fit for fairies, on the Fairy Dell Walking Track (1.4km; 40 mins).

Hunt for treasure at Bruthen Bizarre. The shop is floor-to-ceiling with retro wares and collectables, spilling out onto the front lawn.
Pack a picnic and head to Ramrod Swimming Hole, a tranquil widening of the Tambo River, perfect for riverside lazing or swimming during warmer weather.
Take one of Australia’s best road trips along the Great Alpine Road and discover alpine villages, gobsmacking panoramas and cattlemen legend, connecting the Gippsland Lakes and High Country.
Bruthen’s flagship event is the annual Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival held in February. Toe-tapping tunes and good vibes await with jam sessions, workshops, festival markets and live performances throughout the town across three days.
