Overnight Hiking

If you are up for some classic Wilsons Prom camping, consider the Wilsons Promontory Southern Circuit Walk. This circuit, also known as the ‘Great Prom Walk’ is not for the casual stroller. This is Wilsons Prom hiking at its best – three to four days of beaches, hidden coves, magical sunrises and adorable animals. The distance is 35.5km to 52.8km, depending on the route you choose to take, and every metre is worth it.

Starting off at the brilliantly named Windy Saddle, your journey will take you down into the ferny forest of Sealers Cove, and over Kersops Peak to Waterloo Bay. From here you can choose to either continue on towards the lighthouse or loop back down the Telegraph Track – it’s up to you. The Best Day Walks at Wilsons Prom

If you aren’t able to commit to Wilsons Prom hikes that will take several days out of your stay, don’t worry – there are plenty of day walks that will satisfy any nature lover. First up there’s the Lilly Pilly Gully Circuit Walk, a three-hour trek that will take you across the southern face of Mt Bishop through stringybark forest before descending to the lush rainforest of Lilly Pilly Gully. Look out for birds, wallabies and vivid vegetation on this hike.

Next, it’s impossible to visit Wilsons Prom without making a pilgrimage to the top of Mt Oberon. The Mt Oberon Summit Walk is the classic Wilsons Prom hike – we’re talking majestic trees, a steep ascent and mind-bending views. It’s worth getting up at the crack of dawn to catch the sunrise over the Prom from the peak of Mt Oberon. Sit back and watch the sun paint the sea and forest in stunning colours.

For a longer Wilsons Prom hike, consider the Tongue Point Walk. Clocking in at over four hours, this circuit is a commitment, but it’s worth it. Start off at Darby River car park and head out through weathered vegetation onto Tongue Point, where you can enjoy windswept cliffs and looking for foraging animals. Take your binoculars and see if you can spot any dolphins while you’re there.

Wilsons Prom Walks in under 2 hours

If you’re looking for things to do in Wilsons Prom that won’t take all day, try the Loo-Errn Walking Track. It’s an easy stroll along the boardwalk, where you can gaze out across Tidal River. Pack your fishing gear if you’re so inclined or visit around dusk to see if you can spot some wombats. This is a great place for some classic Wilsons Prom camping – set up your tent at the Tidal River Campground.

From there you might decide to do the Tidal River to Squeaky Beach Walk. Pick a clear beach day to enjoy this route at its best – you will start off at Tidal River and wend your way down to Squeaky Beach. This is a great circuit for kids, and there are plenty of interesting rock formations for them to explore at the beach.
