These heritage-listed hop kilns reflect the region’s hop-growing past and add a unique feature to the East Gippsland Rail Trail.
If you’re walking or riding the East Gippsland Rail Trail, keep your eyes peeled for the kilns which make an interesting addition to the landscape.
These heritage-listed hop kilns are a remnant of the area’s hop growing industry which flourished in the 1880s. Next to the main brick building, you can see twin chambers with high, peaked roofs. This roof design encouraged a rising draft to aerate the hops, an important part of the brewing process.
While the hop kilns are not open to the public, they are viewable from the roadside.
The best viewing point is from rail trail, just south of where Kiln Rd crosses the trail. If you’re driving, you’ll spot them on Swan Reach Rd, just south of Kiln Rd.
