We have pulled together a list of trails, parks and reserves that are suitable for both feet and hooves – perfect for you to journey around Gippsland on your faithful steed.

Ride Gippsland's Rail Trails by horse

With plenty of trails to choose from, ranging from 13km - 131km, Gippsland’s rail trails allow access to stunning views of the coastline, hills or bushland. There’s even horse parking (an area to tie up your horse) available in Toora on the Great Southern Rail Trail at Sagasser Park.

Blores Hill Mountain Bike Park

Ride through atmospheric bushland and beneath rocky outcrops on one of the three trails within the Blores Hill Mountain Bike Park. Evelyn’s Trail is 7.2km and is exclusively for horse riding. There are also two other shared trails that horses can use - Tramway 695m, and the Family Loop 3.9km. Horses are not permitted in any other areas of the park.

Lake Glenmaggie

Explore the Instagrammable scenery of Lake Glenmaggie by horseback, taking in the clear blue of the water. The lake is surrounded by picnic and barbecue areas, which make for a great rest or lunch spot.

Nangara Reserve

Located close to Jindivick, this 2.6km loop is a chance to imagine yourself in another time – or perhaps away with the fairies. A quiet trail, Nangara Reserve is excellent for peaceful riding.

Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park

Horse riding is permitted along formed tracks within the park west of Loch Sport. Horse riding is not permitted elsewhere in the park including the Ninety Mile Beach. Beach riding is permitted nearby the Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park west of Seaspray.

Alpine National Park

Horse riding is a popular activity over the warmer months in this snowgum-dotted national park in Victoria’s high country. The Bicentennial National Trail is legendary among riders, passing through the Wonnangatta Valley. Restricted times and group sizes apply - check with Parks Victoria before travelling.

Avon Mt Hedrick Scenic Reserve

Located in the foothills of the Victorian alps, this scenic reserve of dry open forest is cut by the Avon River in a magnificent gorge of rocky escarpments.

WATTLE BANK FARM

Wattle Bank (near Inverloch)

Take a natural horsemanship lesson or saddle up for a trail ride at this sustainable farm oasis near Inverloch. The farm is also a citrus orchard, mushroom growing facility and vegetable garden, all based on principles of permaculture and regeneration, so it’s no surprise that these horses are well loved at this idyllic farm.

KAROONDA PARK

Gelantipy (near Buchan)

Get your Man-From-Snowy-River on with a horse trail ride at Karoonda Park. Seriously – they'll even provide a Driza Bone if the weather calls for it. Atop your trusty steed, trot and gallop around the Karoonda property through bush and creek crossings, spotting wildlife and spectacular views over the Snowy River.

Snowy Range Horseback Tours

Tamboritha (near Dargo)

Follow in the footsteps (and horse hooves) of the high country cattlemen with Snowy Range Horseback Tours and discover cattlemen’s huts, high plains and gorges reached by the romance of horseback riding. In the cooler months, the rides travel through the stunning Licola Valley and there is the opportunity to take part in some cattle mustering too.

Swan Reach (near Lakes Entrance)
