Sale Common Wetlands Walk

15km | Sale | Follow the boardwalk which explores the Sale Common, an A-lister in the wetlands world for its array of birdlife.

You can enjoy the internationally listed Sale Common Wetlands, hosting a combination of freshwater marshes and red gum woodlands with an enormous variety of birdlife.

Stroll along the extensive new boardwalk allowing you to get close and personal to this magnificent wetlands area. The extensive boardwalk winds its way through a variety of habitats, starting from the edge of the swamp, through deeper water, past islands and through a small reed bed. At the eastern end of the boardwalk, relax and watch the pelicans, swans and ducks from the bird hide.

Start/finish: Multiple start points including the Port of Sale, Lake Guthridge and South Gippsland Hwy near Cox's Bridge.

Aboriginal Heritage

Sale Common Wetlands were known as "Wayput" (The Heart). The wetlands were like a supermarket for the Gunaikurnai people, a rich source of foods and raw materials. Many of the red gums today carry the scars where bark was removed to make canoes.

Accessibility

The walk is suitable for those with prams or wheelchairs, with the paths being generally flat. Surface of the pathway is gravel, concrete and boardwalk.
