Lake Tali Karng is seductively secluded, only reachable by those passionate enough to go on foot.

Avoid the crowds with this isolated lake that allures its visitors to embark on a two day hike to get there.

The lake is hailed as the best hiking destination in Victoria. Period. It has three main walking tracks into the area via Wellington Plains, Wellington River, and Mt Margaret.

It is a natural stream-fed lake in Gippsland’s high country, 20km north-east of Licola as the crow flies.

Lake Tali Karng is perfect for swimming with extremely clear water, without the annoying buzz of jet skis. Swim to the middle of the lake and look up, to enjoy views of towering escarpments and fallen rock surrounding you.

The Gunaikurnai were the first to inhabit this land. Aboriginal people helped guide early European explorers and miners through the mountains using ancient paths, some of which have now become modern roads and trails.

Tali Karng is a sacred site for the Gunaikurnai people, who do not visit this site.

Non-Indigenous visitors are welcome to experience Tali Karng, but they are asked to approach it with respect. Camping near the lake is not allowed, so please be mindful and choose other spots to camp when exploring the area.
