Glorious sunsets take place over the golden sands, vast enough to accommodate crowds on even the busiest summer days.

On a calm day the waves are the perfect size for curious swimmers; not too rough and daunting, but big enough for a bit of fun. During peak season, the beach is regularly patrolled.

When the water looks too rough, you have two options. First, explore the lagoons and walking tracks through sprawling dune vegetation, populated by birds. Or second, if the wind is blowing, try your hand at kitesurfing.

Surfing is also an option here and after nailing some gnarly waves, head up to the Lifesaving Club for a cold drink with a view.

Photographers should head down to the beach to capture the setting sun’s reflection on the glistening sand as the waves recede at low tide.

Hazards: Heavy shorebreak, travelling rips, gutters and windy at times
Foreshore: A long stretch of sand running for 1.8km. The shore is wide at low tide and narrow at high tide

Activities: Swimming, fishing, kitesurfing and surfing
Access: Short, sandy tracks lead to the beach from Surf Parade
Dogs: Off leash area; seasonal restrictions apply
