The walk dips through coastal gullies and takes in a secluded beach, climbing again high above the sea. Keep an eye out for whales making their annual pilgrimage (May - November). You might be in luck and get a glimpse of a local kangaroo mob feeding in knee-high grass.

Finish up at pocket-sized Kilcunda, where you have surely earned a feast from the pub or one of the town’s inviting cafes.

Extensions

From Kilcunda, the walk links into the Bass Coast Rail Trail so if you've got the energy reserves, you can continue on to the centre of Wonthaggi.
The Anderson to San Remo Shared Pathway allows you to extend the walk so you can start from San Remo.

Locals line up to get their coffee and breakfasts from the Kilcunda General Store, where produce is sourced nearby and relishes are made from scratch. Just next door, The Kilcunda Ocean View Hotel, (or ‘The Killy Pub’ to locals) serves up great pub meals with a side of ocean views, live music and incredible sunsets. Udder & Hoe celebrates the produce and lifestyle of local farmers and produce grows closeby.
In Kilcunda, admire the beauty of the iconic Kilcunda Trestle Bridge where Bourne Creek meets the sea, a drawcard for photographers enraptured by the rustic and weathered frame. The view atop the heritage-listed bridge looks over the sandy beach toward rocky outcrops.
There’s great walking and cycling nearby on the Bass Coast Rail Trail, Cape Woolamai Walk and the Anderson to San Remo Shared Pathway. From Wonthaggi you can take a number of loop walks around the State Coal Mine.
Head to the idyllic seaside town of San Remo, home to hungry pelicans, a burgeoning cafe scene and the freshest fish and seafood (stock up at the co-op). Under the backdrop of the impressive San Remo Bridge, there are gentle swimming beaches protected by the channel.
Drive the 14km Bunurong Coastal Drive between Cape Paterson and Inverloch. This scenic drive takes in the Bunurong Marine National Park, with its hidden coves, coastal panoramas and the Dinosaur Dreaming site in the rock pools of Flat Rock.
Cape Paterson Bay Beach is best known for its large rock pool, a tranquil place where protected turquoise waters lap gently. The man-made structure was built in the 1960s and today families still make a beeline to the inviting rocks on hot days.
