Camping in the Buchan region provides the perfect base to hike, walk, wildlife-watch and relax in one of Gippsland's most spectacular wilderness regions..

Buchan is the starting point of The Barry Way, a spectacular, narrow and unsealed stretch of road connecting to Jindabyne in NSW. A night spent in Buchan prior to embarking on this epic 4X4 journey is a must.

Pitch a tent under the ancient deciduous trees at the Buchan Caves Reserve, a haze of crimson and gold during autumn.

Balley Hooley Camping Area is a free campsite, quiet and scenic, set by sounds of the flowing river. The camping area is generally quiet, and has toilets, picnic tables, fire pits and wood barbecues.

Head about 20km north of Buchan to the Timbarra State Forest, where you can set up camp by the Timbarra River at the free Timbarra Bridge Camping Area. The site has fire pits, a drop toilet and offers river swimming.

If remoteness is your thing, 2 hours north of Buchan near the NSW border is Suggan Buggan. Surrounded completely by Alpine National Park, this is a place of magnificent views and deep wilderness and is also the site of a historic schoolhouse. There is a camp area with picnic tables, fireplaces and a toilet along Suggan Buggan Creek.

The Wulgulmerang Recreation Reserve is a flat grassy reserve on the way to Suggan Buggan and the NSW border. The campground has a toilet block and dump point.
