The coastal town of Port Welshpool is in a prime position on a shallow and calm beach.

The beach is protected from the lashings of the unapologetic Bass Strait, and have some of the warmest coastal waters in Victoria, making it perfect for swimming and for families.

Things do to in Port Welshpool

Port Welshpool is a lively fishing town and commercial port, with trawlers moored along the wharf bringing in the day’s catch.

The iconic Port Welshpool Long Jetty seems to go on for miles as it extends into deeper waters, built in the 1800s for unloading supplies from the ships. It is a lovely historical jetty, with marvellous trusses, popular with photographers.

Check out the Port Welshpool and District Maritime Museum with cracking sea tales of the town’s whaling and fishing history, its founding families, maritime artefacts and an old wooden boat on display. Be sure to call ahead before popping by.

Port Welshpool Restaurants & Cafes

Dining at The Rusty Gurnard is one of the main event's on your visit to Port Welshpool. Lap up views across the water as you enjoy your pub fare, or have a cold one at the bar.

Welshpool Hotel boasts a beer garden and kids' playroom. A classic country pub serving hearty favourites, cold beers and local charm - the perfect way to top off a day on the rail trail.

Forty-five minutes north-east in Willung South, is the luxurious Carrajung Estate. This relaxing haven features a fine dining restaurant, cellar door and accommodation where you can unwind in the breathtaking countryside.

Fishing & Boating

Port Welshpool is synonymous with fishing and boating. You can charter a boat from Prom Coastal Charters to explore the surrounding waters. Even the Welshpool Hotel has boat parking available.

Great Southern Rail Trail

The town is the end point of the Great Southern Rail Trail, starting over 100km away in Nyora.

Shorter sections of the trail are easily accomplished from Port Welshpool, including Toora (5km) or Foster (25km). These flat sections of the trail are very family friendly. It’s an interesting ride passing through a range of landscapes, from the wide open pastured countryside to eucalypt gullies against a backdrop of lush hills.
