The laid-back Nicholson River begins in the rugged Australian Alps, flowing into the twinkling Gippsland Lakes at Jones Bay.

Upstream from the Princes Highway the river morphs from narrow and shallow, to sections with deep and wide pools, and then to energetically skipping around rocks and boulders.
