Marlay Point

Gippsland Lakes’ little gem, this destination is ideal for young families and budding fisherfolk.

Just a short drive east of Sale, Marlay Point is one of the best inland secrets of the Gippsland Lakes. Jutting into the north eastern edge of Lake Wellington, Marlay Point provides access to a family-friendly body of water. This spot is nicely protected and ideal for the kids to splash about, unlike the wild waters of the nearby Ninety Mile Beach.

This scenic destination is best known as the starting point of the annual yachting event, the Marlay Point Overnight Yacht Race, ending in Paynesville.

Highlights of Marlay Point

This spot is great for bream, using worms as bait, or carp using corn or bread. A wonderful way to introduce the children to the serenity of the hook and line.
You can set up your tent, caravan or camper at the free campsite right on the foreshore between the big Cypress trees.
The annual Marlay Point Overnight Race is a highlight for portable yachts during the Victorian Labour Day in March every year. This race has attracted excited crowds to the region since 1969. Setting off at sunset, competitors sail across Lake Wellington, through the McLennan Straits into Lake Victoria for the final leg to Paynesville.

Fishing & Boating

Fish off the jetty and sandy banks for bream taking worms. The low hanging fruit in the area is the easy-to-catch carp, that eats corn or bread off the hook. Wade out into Lake Wellington if you want to catch some of the bigger fish.

The Marlay Point Boat Ramp Jetty provides direct access into Lake Wellington.
