Tucked away in Victoria's south eastern corner, the small town of Mallacoota is an outdoor lover's paradise. Here’s the rundown on where to eat, stay and play in Mallacoota.
Things to do
All the best things to do in Mallacoota involve the great outdoors. From beaches to bush tracks, and everything in between, there are ample opportunities to immerse yourself in nature.
The coast of Mallacoota is lined with unique rock formations, and sparkles with turquoise water. Pick a sunny day to go beach hopping, and you're likely to have a patch of sand all to yourself. The gravel Betka Road connects a number of beaches worth exploring, including Betka Beach, Quarry Beach, Secret Beach (don't miss the hidden sea cave) and Pebbly Beach.
It’s practically a rite of passage to get out on the water in Mallacoota, with two lakes and countless rivers and inlets to explore. Don't have a boat license? No worries. There are plenty of small boats suitable for those without a license, and the calm waters of the lakes are the perfect place for a cruise. Mallacoota Hireboats or Bucklands Jetty Boat Hire will get you out on the water and suggest some great places to dock for a BBQ or picnic.
Your own two feet will lead you to some beautiful places around Mallacoota. The Mallacoota Coastal Walk connects the town with a string of gorgeous beaches along a well-made gravel path, where you can choose to do all or a portion of the walk. There is a stunning boardwalk that links the Bottom Lake foreshore in town with the Karbeethong Jetty, weaving over and around the lake and wetlands. Keep your eyes peeled for pelicans and other birds hanging out on the numerous jetties.
And of course, when the sun shines and the weather is warm the water beckons! For a swim, the foreshore area around The Entrance has some beautiful clear tidal waters, and the mouth of the Betka River at Betka Beach is another calm spot for a float. If you're chasing waves, the beach around Bastion Point is a popular local surf spot. It's also possible to rent kayaks from Mallacoota Hireboats around Bottom Lake, which will inevitably lead to a swim!

Mallacoota may not be known as a culinary destination, but that doesn't mean there isn't some good food around if you know where to look! Don’t miss…
- Lucy's Noodles - a Mallacoota icon, Lucy's is an Asian restaurant run by the lovely Lucy, a true local legend. Dine in or take away, choosing from a huge menu of Asian favourites. Don't skip the juicy BBQ pork buns!
- Origami Coffee - if you're looking for your morning caffeine hit, Origami is the place. Just a street back from the foreshore, you'll find this cute coffee cart in a lovely garden with outdoor seating.
- Sundayss - the new kid on the block, Sundayss serves up breakfast and lunch daily. With a focus on light, healthy meals you can get everything from smoothies, sandwiches, sushi or smashed avo!

Mallacoota is full of accommodation options for all budgets and styles.
For a quintessential Mallacoota experience, book a site at the Mallacoota Foreshore Holiday Park. It’s five star waterfront camping with unrivalled views! The campground swells in summer, creating a fantastic family atmosphere, and pooches are invited too.
If you'd prefer your accommodation with four walls, you can't go past Karbeethong Lodge. Situated a few minutes out of town, this beautiful heritage lodge overlooks Bottom Lake, and is the epitome of peace and quiet. Wake up to bird song, and head to the communal kitchen for a huge breakfast spread put on by friendly owners, Jen and Graeme. On a cool evening, the fireplace in the communal lounge is the perfect spot to cosy up.
