Known locally as the “Bream Capital”, it’s no surprise that Bemm River is fishing town heavyweight.
Bream, flathead, perch, salmon, taylor and mullet read like a Hollywood cast list for the fishing world. Bemm River is set at the meeting point of the river by the same name and the vast Sydenham Inlet, affording beautiful lakeside views.
The town of some 70 locals are a welcoming bunch - expect country hospitality and a yarn in this tranquil place.
The small community is surrounded by state forest and bucket loads of water: Bemm River, Sydenham Inlet, Swan Lake and the dramatic coastlines of the neighbouring Croajingolong National Park and Cape Conran Coastal Park.
Things to do in Bemm River
Luderick Point Memorial Park is a scenic park between the jetties with views of the lake and a great place to enjoy a picnic with shelters, barbecues and toilet.
Fishing
It’s all about the fishing here. The most commonly found fish are bream, flathead, perch, salmon, taylor and mullet.
For a spot of river fishing, head above the waterfall near the bridge. Here the fresh water is home to an abundance of trout and bass. For ocean fishing, your best chance for landing a big one is to travel by boat across the inlet and drop a line at the mouth of the channel. Boat hire is available from the Community Centre.
There are two jetties and two boat ramps in the inlet, and four fishing platforms spaced around the town for those without a boat. Stock up at Bemm River Bait & Tackle for your fishing supplies and local advice about where best to fish.
Just a few kilometres out of town is Pearl Point, a remote beach with stunning sedimentary formations and high sand dunes. There is a whale watching platform to watch the annual migration.
