Things to do in Port Albert

Soak up the charm and rich maritime history of nearby Port Albert. The town is a delight to potter around with plenty of things to do and see.

Spot gorgeous heritage buildings and corrugated iron verandahs stretching lazily across the footpaths, an homage to the one of the first settled towns in Victoria. Soak up the history on the Heritage Walk around the port, telling the story of the town’s 1850s boom when European, American and Chinese settlers arrived on ships to stake their claim in the gold fields further north.
Take a stroll along the water's edge and admire the town’s centrepiece, the Port Albert Wharf, an idyllic spot to lap up the views across a shimmering ocean.

Experienced boaters venturing through the entrance are rewarded with excellent seasonal catches, including gummy shark, snapper, kingfish and occasionally tuna. For a more relaxed outing, the inshore waterways around the local islands provide a safe and enjoyable option, offering abundant flathead, whiting, squid, snapper, pinkies and gummy shark.

Take advantage of the 4-berth boat ramp, with floating pontoons suitable for boats and kayaks of all sizes. There is a spacious trailer parking area with convenient washdown facilities and fish cleaning stations.

Land-based fishing

Land-based anglers can unwind on one of three jetties, enjoying the peaceful surroundings while fishing for species like garfish and leatherjackets. Easy parking, access to local shops, and public restrooms enhance the experience.

Surf fishing

For those interested in surf fishing, the iconic Ninety Mile Beach is just a 30-minute drive away, with convenient access at Woodside Beach.

Local tips

The lowdown from the locals is to head to The Entrance, Blue Hole, Snake Channel, Basket Beacon, Kearneys, and the upper Albert River. It's mouth, called Old Port, produces snapper, with flathead and whiting the usual catch.

Walking & cycling

Stands of swamp paperbark and coastal tea tree give way to a rich hinterland of coast banksia and coastal manna gum woodlands on the 6km Christopher Robin Track/ Old Port Walking Trail.

Ride Gippsland's longest rail trail, the Great Southern Rail Trail. The short 14km section between Yarram and Port Albert is an old branch line known as the Tarra Trail. The mostly flat ride is perfect for young children and beginner riders. Yarram is the most eastern point of the rail trail, but it spans a whopping 130-ish kilometres to the west in Nyora, on Melbourne's outskirts.

Aboriginal heritage

White Womans Waterhole in the Won Wron State Forest, is one of the sites of significance on the Bataluk Cultural Trail. It commemorates the tragedies of massacres of Aboriginal people following rumours of a white woman who was held captive by Gurnaikurnai people in the mid 1800s.
